La Catedral Metropolitana is an iconic structure that unfolded over an impressive 108 years, from 1688 to 1796, and holds a significant place in Panamanian history. It played a pivotal role in two crucial events: the reading of the Panamanian Emancipation Declaration from Spain in 1821 and the Separation of Panama from Colombia in 1903, both of which took place on its steps.In 2003, the cathedral underwent a thorough renovation, restoring its grandeur. With its striking black and white checked marble floors and immense organ, it proudly stands as the largest church in Casco Viejo and one of the largest in Central America. Notably, in January 2019, a Papal mass was officiated here. Despite its grandness, the well-air-conditioned and luminous interior exudes a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The cathedral graces Plaza de la Independencia, also known as Plaza Catedral.This magnificent structure plays a significant role in a Panamanian film directed by Abner Beniam, which was Panama's entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards. It even made it to the Best International Feature Film shortlist in December 2021. Much of the film's scenes showcase the stunning backdrop of this church.The church's steeples are a sight to behold when you explore Casco Viejo's rooftops, especially during moonlit nights. In this particular image, captured after a stroll along the Cinta Costera, the full moon emerged through the clouds right between the two crosses, creating a breathtaking and almost heavenly scene.
