Calle 2nda holds a special place in my heart as it was my first home in Casco Viejo. From this vantage point, the sun gracefully sets over the horizon, casting its warm glow as the tide recedes from the bay. On the sandy shores, dogs playfully frolic in the fading light, while both tourists and locals leisurely take a stroll down to the water's edge to savor the day's end. Along Calle 2nda, cars and tourists often pause, gazing at the tranquil waters, but these historic structures have graced this street for over a century.

The yellow building with the rust-colored roof is the University Club, which houses eight charming condos that boast some of the finest waterfront views in Casco. The street exudes serenity, and the community is welcoming. Nestled beside the University Club is Casa Zarak, there is no other building like the Zarak house in San Felipe which offers individual balconies, two (mine) street level. In 1920 Captain Jorge Zarak purchased the property and demolished the existing wing and replaced it with it's current structure. Today, decendents of his family continues to maintain the apartments within, making it an ideal residence for newcomers eager to acquaint themselves with the neighborhood.

To satisfy your taste buds, the popular restaurant Finca del Mar, recognizable by its striking red awnings, offers a daily 2-for-1 mojito special that tourists sip as they swing in the swinging bar stools and enjoy the sun set. As you meander down the street, you'll soon find yourself in Plaza de Francia at the tip of the southern point of Casco Viejo. This beautiful plaza pays homage to the French role in the construction of the canal. Its large stone tablets and statues are dedicated to the memory of the 22,000 workers who died trying to create the canal. On one side of the plaza are nine restored dungeons that were used by the Spaniards and later by the Colombians. Although they’re now home to some rather upscale art galleries and shops, you can still see the original stonework. Also on the plaza are the Teatro Anita Villalaz and the Instituto Nacional de Cultura.

This street leaves a profound impression, this perspective amplifies it.
