#14: Mossy Stairs, Calle Juan Mendoza
These enchanting moss-covered stairs to nowhere hold a special place in my heart and are among my most cherished images. You can find these evocative stairs on Calle Juan Mendoza, nestled just at the periphery of Casco Viejo. It's a street that beckons exploration and discovery, sitting a half a block away from the bustling meat and vegetable market known as Mercado San Felipe Neri. When I shop at the market, I always make a point to walk down this side streat to visit my favorite Chinese vegetable vendor.
One day, as I was strolling along, observing the evident poverty and abundant debris my eyes fell upon this grand staircase, standing with a quiet dignity, yet seemingly leading to nowhere. I couldn't help but wonder how many feet had climbed up and down these weathered steps over the years. The numbers "1915" etched onto the staircase likely signify the date the building was erected.
The stairs' juxtaposition in the urban landscape draws you into a captivating narrative, allowing the imagination to wander through the possibilities of what once existed within this space, perhaps a cherished home filled with stories and memories. This image has already gained a dedicated following and is fast becoming a favorite among my collection.
